Prof.Dr. Ad BogersProf. Dr. Ad Bogers, born in Breda, studied medicine at the University of Maastricht. He obtained his doctor's degree in 1979 and in 1980 he did his medical finals. He then worked as a Thoracic Surgery senior house officer (AGNIO) in the Leiden General Hospital, Algemeen Ziekenhuis Leiden, and followed the preliminary training as a General Surgeon and the training as a cardiopulmonary surgeon. He took his PhD in 1988 at the University of Leiden on the thesis: "Congenital Coronary Artery Anomalies, clinical and embryological aspects". Since 1988 he has also been associated as a cardiopulmonary surgeon with the Thoracic Surgery department of the Erasmus MC. In 1995 he became Special Professor of Pediatric Heart Surgery and since 1999 has been Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery. In that same year he also became Head of Thoracic Surgery at the Erasmus MC. His scientific interests lie in the field of congenital problems, allografts and autografts, lung and airway problems in children, trachea problems, surgical decision analysis and intensive care. |

Prof.Dr. Dirk J.G.M. DunckerProf. Dr. Dirk J.G.M. Duncker was recently appointed Professor of Experimental Cardiology. He took his PhD in 1988 at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and took his medicine finals two years later. He then worked as a post-doc at the University of Minnesota from 1991 to 1994. Since 1994 he has worked at the Thoraxcenter of the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, first as a Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) academic researcher (1995-2000), and then as Established Investigator of the Netherlands Heart Foundation, Nederlandse Hartstichting (2001-2003). His research interest lies in the field of coronary circulation control, control of microvascular tone, myocardial ischemia, left ventrical hypertrophy and remodeling, and heart failure. |

Prof.Dr. Pim de FeijterProf. Dr. Pim de Feijter was born in 1944 in Terneuzen. In 1970 he completed his Medical training at the Free University (VU) of Amsterdam. From 1970 to 1972 he fulfilled his military service as a Medical lieutenant. From 1972 to 1977 he followed the Cardiology training at the VU Amsterdam, after which he joined the staff of the Cardiology department. In 1981 he took his PhD on the thesis: "Value and limitations of exercise testing". In 1983 he joined the staff of the Cardiology department of the Thoraxcenter in Rotterdam. His main work was heart catheterization and interventional cardiology and over the last few years non-invasive diagnosis of ischemic heart diseases. In March 2002 he was appointed Professor of "Non-invasive diagnosis of ischemic heart diseases". The chair is a 50/50 appointment in the Cardiology and Radiology department, which gives expression to the importance that both departments attach to cooperation in the field of the diagnosis of heart diseases. |

Prof.Dr. Patrick SerruysProf. Dr. Patrick Serruys comes from Belgium and studied at the University of Leuven. In 1972 he obtained his doctor's degree at the University of Leuven. He worked at this university in the Cardiology department until 1976 and then joined the Thoraxcenter in Rotterdam. In 1986 he obtained his PhD on the thesis: "Transluminal coronary angioplasty: an investigational tool and a non operative treatment of acute myocardial ischemia". In 1988 he was appointed Professor of Interventional Cardiology at the Thoraxcenter of the Erasmus MC. |

Prof.Dr. Maarten SimoonsProf. Dr. Maarten Simoons comes from Schoorl, North-Holland and obtained his doctor's degree in 1968 at the University of Utrecht. He then did his medical finals in 1970. After that he worked as a fellow at the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. He gained his PhD in 1976 at the University of Utrecht on the thesis: "Computer assisted interpretation of exercise electrocardiograms". Meanwhile he had started his Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at Rotterdam University Hospital, Academisch Ziekenhuis Rotterdam. In 1978 he was registered in the specialists register as a cardiologist. From 1989 to 1995 he was Professor of Clinical Cardiology (intensive care) and since 1996 he has been Professor of Cardiology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. In 2003 he was appointed Head of the Cardiology department in the Thoraxcenter. Prof. Simoons is also chairman of the research school COEUR, past president of the European Society of Cardiology and member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). |

Prof.Dr.Ir. Ton van der SteenTon van der Steen is professor of Biomedical Technology in cardiology. In 1989 he obtained his Master of Science in Technical Physics at the Technical University of Delft. In 1994 took his PhD in Medical Technology at the Catholic University of Nijmegen. Since 1994 he has been associated with the Thoraxcenter in Rotterdam. He is Head of the Biomedical Technology department of the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus MC. His experience lies in the field of diagnostic cardiological imaging equipment with the emphasis on echography. Recent research interest has been devoted to vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque detection, ultrasound contrast detection, ultrasound transducer design and hemodynamics. |
