Basic medical training: Erasmusarts 2007

The Thoraxcenter participates in the basic medical training program 'Erasmusarts 2007'. The first year student in the fourth week of his/her study already comes into contact with various aspects of coronary heart disease. In the topic "Disorders in the internal environment", which follows on directly from the introduction lasting six weeks, the knowledge of coronary syndromes is further extended. In addition most components of cardiology and cardiac surgery that belong to the knowledge of the basic doctor, are discussed in this topic. The training is organized such that the student gains most knowledge through self study assignments. Formal lectures are mainly given to support these study assignments. Patient demonstrations, tutorials and skills training provide further support. Since the academic year of 2003/2004 part of the patient demonstrations are provided directly by the outpatient department, echo room, heart catheterization room and, perhaps in the near future, the operating theater.
