Education for specialists in training


The Thoraxcenter is authorized for the Cardiology A training. The cardiologist training lasts 6 years, including 1 year of internal medicine, 3 years of basic cardiology training and 2 years of cardiology focus areas.
A distinction is made between 6 cardiology focus areas: general cardiology, cardiologist / intensive care specialist, interventional cardiology, clinical electrophysiology, non-invasive imaging investigation and cardiology of congenital heart defects.
The year of internal medicine and the general cardiology (pre-)training is partly organized in the Rijnmond region. Within the Thoraxcenter registrars can complete their training in all 6 focus areas. There are 18 training places.

The Thoraxcenter is authorized for the Cardiothoracic Surgery A training. The cardiothoracic surgeon training at present lasts 6 years, including 2 years general medicine. As a result of social changes consideration is being given to restructuring this training scheme, in particular with regard to tying in with the basic doctor's training and with regard to the preliminary training in general medicine. The Cardiothoracic Surgery department has 3 training places. In addition this department provides placements within the specialist training in anesthesiology and cardiology. The placement "heart surgery for congenital defects" is also provided for cardiothoracic surgery centers that do not practice this part of the subject.
